The more you play, the more unique specialized dwarves you will find. Letting them gain experience in other fields is always a good idea as well, but if you need a specialized dwarf for a certain task, it’s best to know how to fit them to the right task. This only means that there are certain tasks that the dwarves with that specialty will do better than others will with that specific task. If you really pay attention to your dwarves’ attributes, you’ll see that most of them actually have specialties. Keep in mind that each dwarf can have up to four different labor tasks, so be sure to keep each dwarf’s work tasks diverse so that they aren’t working on only one type of task throughout their entire life. Just click on the task that you want to assign, then search for the name of the dwarf you want to assign that task to and click on it. Assigning each of these labor tasks to a dwarf in Dwarf Fortress is fairly simple.
